Thailand (Phuket)

Key things to know before your trip
Last update November 27, 2024
  • Citizens from 64 countries can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days (plus 30-day prolongation at the immigration office)
  • You can get a visa upon arrival if you're from one of the 19 specified countries. There's a fee of 2,000 Thai Baht
  • All other nationals will need to secure a visa before arrival. This can be done either at a Thai embassy/consulate or through the e-visa system, depending on your nationality

Taxi
  • Taxi apps Grab, Bolt
  • Never agree to a trip with taxi drivers (if not ordered via the taxi app) without discussing the fare before departure. This applies to any country
Navigation on-site
Install the Maps Me app in advance and download the offline map of Thailand for the specific region you'll be visiting
  • Mobile operators Dtac, True Move H, Ais,
  • You can buy a sim card at the airport, an official mobile operator store in a shopping center, or a travel agency.
  • Top up at a grocery store like 7/11, Family Mart, in the mobile operator’s application (Dtac has the most convenient app)
  • E-sim (if your phone supports this function)
  • You can order a SIM card through the Lazada website
  • One of the most profitable options is to ask for the cheapest SIM card in an official mobile operator store, for about 20-60 baht, and then buy the calls and internet package you need directly in the application
  • Install the WiFi Map app - the map with WiFi hotspots and passwords, and get a 10% discount on purchasing an e-sim (use promo code 7ECF3FK for SIM card purchase)
Currency exchange
  • Currency - Thai baht (THB)
  • Best exchange rates can be found in exchange offices
  • You can withdraw cash from ATMs (except cards issued by Russian banks)
  • ! Always double-check the withdrawal fee when using ATMs. Sometimes, the screen might display misleading information. For instance, it might show a 1% fee for a certain amount, but when you do the math, it could actually be 4%. So, stay alert and ensure you're not paying more than expected!
From the airport to the city
  • Buses, Minibuses: operate from morning till evening. After 7-8 PM, travel becomes challenging
  • Transfers: included if you have a tour package. Alternatively, pre-arrange through your hotel or third-party services
  • Taxi: available through apps, but you'll need to leave the airport's premises
  • Airport Taxi Service: comparable in price to app-based taxis, offering direct pickup from the airport
Where to stay
  • Hotels, apartments, condominiums
  • Use reservation websites or Facebook marketplaces. Be sure to check availability (some options may be irrelevant)
  • Condominiums available for long-term (6+ months), often requiring a 2-3 month deposit
  • Walk into properties with rental signs or hotels directly
  • If you're staying at a hotel for an extended period, don't hesitate to negotiate the price!
  • Plenty of Thai, Chinese, and Malaysian dishes, along with European options
  • Visit places recommended by the Michelin Guide. In the Guide you'll find suggested dishes to try, typically priced at $3-4 USD. We tried almost all the recommended places in Phuket; the dishes were authentic, diverse, and, importantly, safe.
Infrastructure is less developed inland
  • Buses: Found mainly in Phuket-town and surrounding areas
  • Songtaew: Extended pickups with benches accommodating 6-8 passengers
  • Most tourists opt for taxis, tuk-tuks (slightly pricier but hold 6-8 people), or rent bikes/cars. For extended stays, consider obtaining a Thai driving license
